Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) was an American politician, the third president of the United States 1801-1809. Thomas Jefferson was born into a prominent family in Virginia. After studying law in Williamsburg, then the capital of Virginia, he was for a number of years a lawyer and 1769-1775 a member of the Virginia legislature. As a delegate to the Continental Congress 1775-1776, he was the main man behind the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Todays stamp depicting Thomas Jefferson is from 1856.
