Todays stamp from former Yugoslavia (1964) shows the Apollo or mountain Apollo (Parnassius apollo). It is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae. This beautiful butterfly is named after the deity Apollo, that is recognized as a god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases. This typically mountain species prefers hills and flowery alpine meadows and pastures of European and Asian mountains.
