The wild cat is a species in the cat family. It occurs in Europe, western Asia and Africa. The wild cat is considered the progenitor of the domestic cat, which is now most often perceived as an independent species. Historically, the wild cat was found in almost all of Europe, but not on the Scandinavian peninsula, in Finland and in Karelia. Todays stamp showing the wild cat is from Romania and was issued in 1986.
